What's The Word

Introducing Carivu!

Dr. Turchin is excited to announce our practice has acquired new technology that enhances our ability to detect and diagnose tooth problems earlier and more effectively than previously possible.

CariVu is a handheld laser fluorescence device that we use in conjunction with Xrays and visual exams for early detection of:

Smooth surface cavities
Occlusal cavities
lnterproximal cavities
Initial cavities
Secondary cavities
Hairline cracks

CariVu uses digital imaging and fiber optic illumination to produce extremely clear images, in real time, on our computer screen. And because CariVu images are digital, we can also save them for future comparison.

By detecting problems earlier and more effectively, CariVu enables us to employ early intervention methods that can help us avoid much bigger issues and more extensive procedures later on. And because CariVu uses light rather than radiation, it is completely radiation-free.

Please ask us about CariVu on your next visit. We'll be pleased to answer your questions and to show you how CariVu can help you maintain your dental health while minimizing your overall treatment costs.

Bad Breath (Halitosis)

Why does your breath get stinky?

It is very important to find out the cause of your bad breath because you could be saving your own life.

There are a number of conditions which can cause your bad breath.  The cause can be something as simple as what you’ve eaten or food which is caught between your teeth and hasn’t been cleaned properly.  It can be something like tooth decay or gum disease.  Or it can be something more serious like a systemic condition involving your sinus, stomach or lungs.  Once you know the source of your bad breath you can start to take steps to fix it.  In most cases the cause of your bad breath will be easily treatable.

Oral hygiene habits for fresh breath should include:

  • brushing your teeth 2-3 times a day for two minutes
  • brushing your tongue daily
  • flossing daily – floss goes where your toothbrush doesn’t

In addition to these daily steps there are a few other things you can do to keep your breath fresh:

  • avoid foods that cause bad breath like onions and garlic
  • avoid tobacco products
  • avoid a dry mouth - get your saliva flowing to wash away the bacteria that cause the odor of bad breath.  One way is to chew sugarless gum or a sugarless mint which will also freshen your breath instantly
  • over the counter antimicrobial mouthwashes which freshen your breath instantly in addition to getting the saliva flowing.

Following this simple regimen will almost always keep your breath fresh, but if it doesn’t you need to find out why.

Chronic bad breath can be cause for alarm.  If you are cleaning your teeth properly, visiting your dentist regularly and you have ruled out any dental causes for the bad breath you should visit your physician to rule out something more serious.

Bottom line, your bad breath is telling you something.  Most times that may just be that you need to improve your hygiene habits.  But sometimes it’s telling you there’s something more serious going on.  Either way, you should heed the message and take steps to get your breath fresh again.  Fresh breath is happy and healthy breath!
